Why Music Theory?

Do you sometimes feel your lesson time is so limited and precious?
Your piano/violin teacher wants to focus more on the technique, musicality, and other elements, therefore, very little time may be left for music theory.
Do you sometimes struggle when approaching a new piece, how to sight-read efficiently and count the rhythm accurately? 
How can we practice more efficiently?
Do you tend to ignore the little accidentals, such as # or b? How to understand the key, and stop playing wrong notes?

Fundamental Music Theory

At least 6 months of study instruments

  • Have some basic skills of reading notes but may not be very quick reaction

  • Will learn basic conducting patterns, RHYTHM, RHYTHM, RHYTHM is always very important, count and feel the pulse!

  • Intervals and Quality, sing and feel them, learn to use solfege

  • Key Signature, all Major Keys, all natural and harmonic minor scales

  • Major and minor triads

  • If you like to improvise and compose music, those are very fun!

Intermediate Music Theory

At least 2 years of instrument study, age 9 and up

  • Cover all the knowledge and requirements from ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory

  • You will learn topics systematically even if you won't take the examImprove musicianship

  • Simple and Compound Rhythm

  • All Key Signature, All Major scales and all three types of minor scales, functions

  • Intervals (including compound interval) and inversions

  • Orchestral Instruments and Tranposition

  • Four Types of Triads: Major, minor, Augmented and diminished, and inversions

  • Cadences

  • Terminology, and Ornamentation 

Advanced Music Theory

ABRSM Music Theory Grade 6-8, AP Music Theory, upon inquiry and availability

More than 5 years of instruments study
